Spotlight on Excessive Government Secrecy

As set forth in our Declaration of Independence, in order for our nation's citizens to provide the consent upon which our government is based, it must be an informed consent.

How much contempt does our Government have for ensuring an informed citizenry? You do not have to look any further than the amazing 20 formal interviews and at least 5 "casual conversations" by the FBI with former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein that were posted to the web site of the National Security Archive as the result of a Freedom of Information Act request they had made.

What is shocking about this entire episode is that after the death of more than 4,200 and the wounding of more than 30,100 American service members, after the death of up to a 100,000 or more Iraqis, after sending hundreds of thousands of American troops into the trials of combat (many for multiple tours), after the expenditure of almost $700,000,000,000 belonging to our country's taxpayers, you would think that a request for this information would not have to be made in the first place; that it would be intuitively obvious to the most obtuse bureaucracy that of course, this is not only information that Americans must have, it is information the Government is obligated to affirmatively disclose long before someone asks for it.

Unfortunately, such is not the case. It appears more likely that some in the Government would have been just as happy to have this information sit in a vault for 30 years or more if no one had asked for it; notwithstanding the blood and treasure the American citizenry has spent and the brutality of the war launched in their name in order to “topple” the man who was interviewed. To think that our nation’s citizens would not care what the man had to say is indefensible.

Where is the “freedom” in how the Government treated this information?
